Tech N9ne

Some artists get writers block, but for Tech N9ne, the ideas keep flowing.

That’s why, more than a decade after he released his first nationally-distributed album, the pioneering Kansas City rapper decided to call his forthcoming studio album Something Else.
“After all this music, you have the nerve to say to the world that you have something else other than what we’ve heard already, that’s cocky,” Tech N9ne says. “I knew going into this album that it was going to have to be totally something else beatwise, contentwise and featurewise. I went in on a lot of stuff.”

Tech N9ne delivers on his goals throughout Something Else, a rousing collection that takes listeners on an epic journey through Fire, Water and Earth sections of the album, a formatting tactic Tech N9ne also employed on his landmark Anghellic album in 2001 and his Everready [The Religion] album in 2006.
“Straight Out The Gate” kicks off the intense Fire section of the album. Featuring System Of A Down’s Serj Tankian, the song has political and religious overtones while highlighting both Tankian and Tech N9ne’s talents. “Serj, he’s a guy that takes chances with music and sounds and fuses them together and that’s how I feel about my hip-hop music,” Tech N9ne says. “Our being on a song together, that’s one of the biggest things that could happen. That’s why I put it first on the album.”

From there, Tech keeps the intensity level sky-high with “B.I.T.C.H.,” an acronym for “Breaking Into Colored Houses,” a cut about his interaction with his black fans. “Love 2 Dislike Me” discusses the aftermath of a relationship gone sour, while “Fortune Force Field” explains how certain people are trying to keep Tech N9ne from enjoying all the fruits of his musical labor. Then there’s “I’m Not A Saint,” Tech N9ne’s latest look at his Evil Brain Angel Heart persona.

Tech N9ne embraces such personal, evocative subject matter because it is an innate part of his artistry. “The reason I opened up on this album is because throughout my career, all I’ve been doing is being inside out, being an open book,” he says. “Since the album is called Something Else, I have to let certain things loose that I otherwise wouldn’t let loose.”

The same logic applies to “Fragile,” a fierce collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, ¡Mayday! and Kendall Morgan. Here, the artists blast uninformed critics who lack the perspective and qualifications to fully and accurately evaluate their craft. Tech N9ne also introduces spirited newcomer Angel Davanport on “Priorities,” which also features Game.

As the Water section of the album arrives, the selections become calmer, if only thematically. “Dwamn” introduces the album’s first party vibe, while “So Dope (They Wanna)” with Wrekonize, Snow Tha Product and Twisted Insane, is the latest of Tech N9ne’s posse cuts highlighting rappers who excel at rapid-fire rapping, or chopping. “See Me,” with Wiz Khalifa and B.o.B., showcases Tech N9ne’s ability as an independent artist to conceive and execute independent albums with major label artists and with a major label feel. That’s also why this song’s lyrics focus on people overlooking Tech N9ne’s remarkable achievements – that he’s sold more than 2 million units independently, developed into to one of music’s most dependable touring artists and that he’s built Strange Music into one of rap’s most successful imprints from his hometown of Kansas City.

As Something Else advances to the Earth section, Tech N9ne focuses on topics he hopes will make the world better. “That’s My Kid,” with CeeLo Green, Big K.R.I.T. and Kutt Calhoun, for instance, finds Tech N9ne contemplating the recent rash of school shootings and realizing how fortunate he is that his children did not make some of the mistakes that he did as a child. “I was just sitting up one day looking at all these kids that do these heinous things, these horrible things,” Tech N9ne says. “I’m lucky that my son didn’t latch on to the Blood gang nonsense that I grew up doing. He latched on to music and now he wants to rap. I’m blessed. I have to rejoice.”

Tech N9ne also rejoiced on the career-defining song “Strange 2013,” his collaboration with The Doors. Tech N9ne named his Strange Music label with partner Travis O’Guin after the icon rock group’s songs “Strange Days” and “People Are Strange.” As a black fan of rock and rap growing up in Missouri, Tech N9ne grew up thinking he was “strange”. Getting to work with the surviving members of The Doors on “Strange 2013,” a reworking of “Strange Days,” is one of the proudest moments of his groundbreaking career.

“If it wasn’t for their fusion of music, I would have never told Travis I wanted to call the joint venture that we have Strange Music,” Tech N9ne explains. “That’s why ‘Strange 2013’ meant so much to me. Now, when I listen to it, I smile, like, ‘I did that.’ They’re the ones that inspired me. It’s the thing keeping me alive and putting my kids through college, because I was a Doors fan.”

Today, millions of people are Tech N9ne fans. He became known as an innovative rapper in the 1990s because of his trendsetting ability to rap at breakneck speed, to rap backwards and, soon thereafter, to also deliver riveting personal songs that examined his own inner demons, as evidenced throughout such memorable cuts as “Tormented” and “Real Killer.” In the 2000s, Tech N9ne hit the road relentlessly, becoming one of rap’s premier touring acts.

With 2012’s “Hostile Takeover 2012 Tour,” Tech N9ne holds the title of headlining the longest continuous tour in rap history. Even with all these accolades and the impressive list of artists Tech N9ne features on Something Else, he sounds as fresh and hungry as he did when he first started releasing music commercially more than a decade ago. “I’ve got a chip on my shoulder,” Tech N9ne says. “I’ve still got a lot to prove. That’s why I still rap so hard. I’m always trying to get better and better. I’m not softening it.”

That, in and of itself, is Something Else indeed.

Blockchain is the most important new technology that most are still in the early stages of understanding. Blockchain is constructing a more democratic and decentralized future, whose beneficiaries will range widely, anywhere from Syrian refugees to investment bankers. The World Economic Forum estimates that by 2027, 10% of global GDP will be stored on blockchain technology. Rapidly evolving Blockchain technology and startups are poised to fundamentally change entire business models, fundraising models, business operations, payments systems, data storage, and more. Startups from the Blockchain space are creating a whole new economy relying on the distribution of wealth. The token sales format is disrupting the traditional exclusive startup investment scheme by lowering entrance barriers for investors and aligning interest among its founders, stakeholders, and future users. Come learn the core basics of startup investment and see some of the leading players in the space discuss how crowd sales have overtaken venture capital as the main financial driver of innovation for Blockchain projects. We will also create a dialog about the nascent industry’s effect on venture capital, regulatory environments, as well as talks from projects of the past and the future in methodology and design. SuperDuperKyle

Rapper Kyle is, frankly, more than just a rapper. A cursory tour of the 21-year-old’s wildly eclectic confections invokes touchstones of dance, pop, R&B, hip-hop and a cavalry of other genres, making for a broad sonic palette that defines him as one of the most compelling MCs on the rise.

“My potential as an artist is to blend all genres of music, which is something that’s just universal, that everyone on earth is going to appreciate,” says Kyle, who originally hails from Ventura, Calif. and is currently based in Los Angeles. “I feel like that’s what I’m capable of as an artist—is making a song that everyone in every genre can love.

His versatility shines on his upcoming sophomore album, which primarily features production from M-Phazes (Eminem, Kimbra) and Sunny Norway (Bun B, Juicy J) as well as guest appearances from artists including Chance the Rapper and Yuna.

Eclecticism is a consistent theme in Kyle Harvey’s life. As a kid, he was raised on a diverse collection of artists, from Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin to Incubus and Weezer. But it was when he discovered hip-hop when he hit double digits that he realized his true calling, gravitating towards likeminded genre-benders like Kid CuDi and studying East Coast rappers including Jadakiss, Big L and Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

Their influence is evident on songs like recent single “Don’t Want to Fall in Love,” where he opens up about a cracked relationship over a electro-zapped pop-rap beat. The humility on the track, coupled with his jocular flow and whip-smart rhymes, serves as a testament to his mission as an artist to have his audience identify with his experiences. “Throughout my career, I just want to peel back more and more layers of who I am, and get deeper and more connected with people and tell more relatable stories,” he says. It’s that honesty, coupled with his trademark buoyant personality, that distinguishes him in the hip-hop arena and drives his authentic message to be yourself, whether you’re fun or charismatic—both traits that exemplify who he is. “That’s how you relate deeper: by further exposing yourself.”

Kyle, who initially went by the name K.i.D., spent his teen years refined his skills as an MC, turning to the Internet to upload covers and originals to YouTube and spread his music through social media networks. After releasing Beautiful Loser via current label Indie-Pop in August 2013, his career took flight. The video for “Keep It Real” got nearly 700,000 YouTube hits in its first week, while the mixtape, whose songs generated millions of listens on Soundcloud, got press from The New York Times, Complex and BET’s 106 & Park. Single “Fruit Snacks” won over fans like Jaden Smith and Childish Gambino, who used the track in his short film Clapping for the Wrong Reasons, and landed him shows with Chance the Rapper and G-Eazy prior to a headlining tour earlier this year.

With his sophomore album set for release later this year, Kyle is readying a project that will show just how capable he is of breaking the limits on what rap can be. “I want to be an artist who can get my music out to the world and have it be interesting,” he says. “I want to express my music on the highest platform in the world—and spread my message as far as possible.”

Get immersed in the dark side of Cedarburg’s history with stories and live performances representing hauntings and atrocities from bygone days. More than just ghost stories, the past comes alive in encounters with the ghostly citizens of old Cedarburg through costumed actors and historic photos. Just when we think that times are bad today, we are reminded that evil and mental derangement have always been with us, from the violent streets of the big cities to the quiet lanes of small town America – proving that perhaps the “good old days” were not so good after all.

This year’s tour includes scenes of new tales recently discovered in the deep recesses of historic Cedarburg documents and newspapers. “Journalist” docents “scoop” stories out of the old Cedarburg News and lead guests on a 90-minute walking tour through new and familiar stops in Cedarburg’s National Historic District and Zur Ruhe cemetery.

EARLY ENTRY PACKAGE – Limited to 50 per show. Package includes 1 general admission ticket, 1 early entry pass, 1 exclusive tour poster, 1 VIP laminate, Watch the end of SoMo's soundcheck.

SoMo—aka Joseph Somers-Morales—will never forget being on stage as a kid. At six-years-old, he sang at a popular club on historic 6th Street in Austin, TX.

“I was way too young to be in a bar,” he laughs.

However, his life took a bit of a detour away from music for quite some time. It certainly loomed in the background, but he had other things on his mind.

“My dad was in a jazz rock band called Duck Soup, and he wasn’t always there,” admits SoMo. “Because of the lifestyle, I just wanted to grow up, be normal, and have a family. My mom really raised my brother and me. I didn’t fight music, but I didn’t necessarily embrace it either. I wanted to do my own thing.”

Throughout high school in Denison, TX, that’s precisely what he did. He played football and hung out with friends, distancing himself from the proverbial “stage” as much as possible. However, in 2009, music called to him in the strangest and most serendipitous way. Receiving a piano from his mom for Christmas, he taught himself how to play by ear and recorded a cover of Chris Brown’s “Crawl”.

Uploading the performance to YouTube, it soon went viral. With his brother John’s encouragement, he teamed up with producer and engineer Cody Tarpley and continued to cut covers periodically over the next year. Prior to the release of Drake’s Take Care in 2011, he recorded a medley of the entire album and dropped it on the album’s release day. That medley would go on to garner over 4 million views, and it started to solidify the SoMo phenomenon.

Throughout 2012, the singer and songwriter began to buckle down and work on his first original music. His efforts in the studio yielded the independent debut mixtape, My Life. A powerful, palpable, and passionate collection, it merged R&B spirit with pop soul, showcasing his dynamic voice and songwriting prowess. Released for free on his birthday September 11, My Life opened up SoMo’s world.

“It was important to stand out,” he goes on. “On My Life, we implemented different styles to show I could write over any type of music. At the same time, it’s a cohesive story about my actual life since I started making music. There are party moments. There’s heartbreak. There’s love. It’s real.”

My Life spawned his first hit “Ride”. Without any radio support and no label at the time, the track began selling 10,000 digital tracks weekly, while its music video directed by Dan Gotti accumulated over 3 million views. It offered a fitting introduction to SoMo with its sexy hook and slick, soaring, and seductive sound.

“It just happened one night,” he remembers. “A girl came over, and I was drinking some red wine. I started playing the piano, and I hit my favorite chord. I wrote the hook right away. I was deeply in love with this girl and the song essentially says, ‘I’m going to ride. I’d die for you. My love is forever’. Of course, there is that sexual element though. It’s fun.”

Simultaneously, SoMo released a cover every single Sunday as part of his “SoMo Sunday” campaign. Speaking directly to his fans, he offered up new music each week, and the series has accrued 50 million-plus views on YouTube.

As “Ride” continued to gain steam, SoMo hit the road for a sold out headline tour. Struck by all of his success, Republic Records reached out and offered him a deal in October 2013. Now, he’s prepping his self-titled major label debut for a 2014 release. For the artist, nothing has changed though.

“That’s why I’m calling the record SoMo,” he reveals. “That name has been with me for so long. In seventh grade, a girl wrote me a note and called me JoSoMo. I thought it was cool so I made an AIM screen name JoSoMo. All of my football teammates and coaches started calling me SoMo on the field. This is who I am.”

Ultimately though, it’s his intimate, infectious, and irresistible music that’s going to make everyone remember that name. “When I sing, I really mean it,” he leaves off. “If I’m singing about a woman in the studio, I sing into the mic like it’s her ear. If I’m singing about something sad or happy, I’ll put myself in that mood. My music is driven by emotion from the inside. My motto is, “If it sounds good, people will listen.”

Gary Clark Jr. – The Story of Sonny Boy Slim Tour

Gary Clark Jr. – The Story of Sonny Boy Slim Tour
Event on 2016-02-26 20:00:00

Ever since 2010, when Gary Clark Jr. wowed audiences with electrifying live sets everywhere from the Crossroads Festival to Hollywood’s historic Hotel Café, his modus operandi has remained crystal clear: “I listen to everything…so I want to play everything.”  The revelation that is the Austin-born virtuoso guitarist, vocalist and songwriter finds him just as much an amalgamation of his myriad influences and inspirations. Anyone who gravitated towards Clark’s, 2011’s Bright Lights EP, heard both the evolution of rock and roll and a savior of blues. The following year’s full-length debut, Blak And Blu, illuminated Clark’s vast spectrum – “Please Come Home” is reminiscent of Smokey Robinson, while “Ain’t Messin’ Around” recalls Sly and the Family Stone. 2014’s double disc Gary Clark Jr–Live projected Clark into 3D by adding palpable dimension and transcendent power –– songs soared and drifted from the epic, psychedelic-blues of  “When My Train Comes In” to his anthemic, hip-hop, rock-crunch calling card, “Bright Lights”, all the way down to the deep, dark, muddy water of “When The Sun Goes Down”.

There are a handful of folks who have informed for the mélange of genres and styles, which comprise the genius of Clark. One is Michael Jackson. It was on Denver stop of MJ’s Bad Tour where a four-year-old Gary’s life was altered after witnessing The King of Pop. By the sixth grade, Clark would own his first set of strings (Ibanez RX20).

As a teen, Clark began making a local name by jamming with adult musicians around nearby clubs. He struck a balance by singing in the church choir with his sisters.  That gritty & sweet combination imbues the honey-thick soul that oozes from his vocals today. The eclectic Texas circuit, though, was Clark greatest university, where another culprit in the GCJ genesis lives: Clifford Antone, ambassador of the Austin music scene. Antone’s nightclub granted Clark the honor of sharing the stage with local blues heroes like Jimmie Vaughn, Hubert Sumlin Jr, and Pinetop Perkins. This on-the-job training, combined with studying licks by literal Kings like BB, Albert and Freddie, observing the mastery of Curtis Mayfield, Miles Davis, Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Parliament-Funkadelic, and digesting the fresh edge of Tupac and Biggie, lifted the guitar prodigy up into a multi-instrumentalist, adept scribe, and undisputed music festival champ.

Now, after spending the last five years transforming audiences from the California desert to the London metropolis, acquiring fans like Barack Obama, Keith Richards, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé along the way, the 6’4 Texan needs to spread his musical wings and spectrum hues wider. This exhibition will be Clark’s second full-length worldwide album, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim due from Warner Bros. Records on September 11th. The title’s inspiration is one half Clark’s Southern roots––those singers and local musicians who saw the future in this young man ––and other half, his acting debut in John Sayles’ 2007 film Honeydripper. A 23-year-old Clark played the fictitious Sonny, (in fact, already his family-given nick-name), a young musician who transformed the blues and R&B into rock and roll. On his latest, Clark isn’t trying to reinvent any wheel. He’d rather deploy as many wheels as possible in order to lead music fans toward his favorite destinations.

“The Healing” mashes blues and hip-hop into the 21st century with a Marleyesque message of hope and faith. This journey of the soul hits Mississippi on the Delta jam of “Shake,” before pulling into the spiritual station of “Church,” serving gospel made with the purist folk elements: hypnotic strum, sweet harmonica, and aloud prayers as painful as they are beautiful (dare we say, Dylan-esque).  “Grinder” makes musical graffiti out of fierce, freeform wah-wah screaming that spars with rap-tough urban tension. The code is completed once Clark’s chordophone wails a salute to all guitar gods.

What this body of work accomplishes that its predecessors hadn’t is spotlight Gary Clark Jr., the artist first — as producer, singer-songwriter — and string master second. His textured voice and eyes-wide writing hug listeners in with a disregard for time period other than the future. The reassuring “Our Love” could’ve easily been a standard in any decade past or present; “Down To Ride”, an avant-garde, soul love letter with its sensual falsetto, classic Casio synths, and outer-space guitar fade, fits into fresh unexplored sonic territories. The trippy flight “Wings” is Clark’s most modern flip as the Outkast fan is heard in his lyrical prime: “We got issues and people get misused/and girl I miss you/but I know that we’ll get through what we go through.”

Sterling songwriting is where Mr. Clark’s evolution is arrayed best. Never has his pen’s moonshine been so in tune with the times. The Lone Star diamond gleams brightest when he’s sketching then voicing his country’s current and evergreen socio-economic tensions simultaneously. When he’s progressing the art of blues by replacing hopeless conclusion with empathy and strength.  When he’s reintroducing and redefining red, white, and blue music. “Hold On,” impressively captures the struggle of being African-American in any era by stirring a pungent punch of Curtis Mayfield, Gil Scott-Heron and Buddy Guy influence over some serious (and visual) commentary. “Seems like new news is the old news from a different angle/another mother on TV crying cause her boy didn’t make it/She said, What am I gon’ do? What I’m gon’ tell these babies?”

A 2015 reply is offered on the all-consuming space-age funk of “Star.”  “I am devoted to seeing you shine on,” could be a message in falsetto from Clark to those babies, his country, his family, and his innermost self.  With a musical palette as gracious and glorious as Gary Clark Jr’s, the target is most likely all of the above. As Clark put his mojo in full motion on the album’s opening track, “The Healing”, he eloquently states his subtle and underlying theme that “this music” is our hope, faith and ultimate healing.

Vibrant Singer/Songwriter RaeLynn to Headline 2015 Music In Our Schools Tour and Raise Awareness for Music Education

Reston, VA (PRWEB) February 24, 2015

“Always Sing” Available Now on iTunes

Nothing gives a voice to students like music! Next month, RaeLynn will hit the road to encourage today’s youth to “Always Sing.” The mantra is also the name of an aptly titled song she wrote for the initiative, which is available now on iTunes, and celebrates the 30th Anniversary of National Music In Our Schools Month. Building on the success of the 2014 Music In Our Schools Tour, RaeLynn will visit five communities in the United States and join Give a Note Foundation and Radio Disney in sharing the message that music belongs in school.

Kicking off the 30th Anniversary of National Music In Our Schools Month this March, the tour will begin with a performance by RaeLynn at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. RaeLynn will perform at Festival Disney as part of Disney Performing Arts, a national competitive music festival, where top school instrumental and vocal ensembles compete with other groups from across the country.

The week-long bus tour, powered by Radio Disney, will make stops along the way where student ensembles will perform “Always Sing.” A highlight at each location will be a special private concert by RaeLynn, who solidified her standing as the highest charting debut single by a solo female artist in 2014, with the empowering, gold-certified “God Made Girls.” The vibrant 20-year-old CMT Next Women of Country honoree will also sing tracks from the diverse collection she penned for her Me EP (The Valory Music Co.), which climbed into the Top 5 on iTunes Top Country Albums chart upon release, and her new single, “For A Boy,” available March 9 on iTunes. No stranger to life on the road, The Voice (season 2) alum is currently on fellow Texan Miranda Lambert’s CERTIFIED PLATINUM Tour and head out with Rascal Flatts’ RIOT TOUR 2015 this summer. Radio Disney’s on-air personality Brooke Taylor will host the on-site activities and experience alongside RaeLynn at each stop.

The route includes visits to schools in five cities: Sayville High School in West Sayville, NY, near Long Island (March 9); Bowie High School in Bowie, MD, near Washington, DC, (March 10); Mason Elementary in Canton, OH, near Cleveland (March 11); Ridgeview Elementary in Hobart, IN, near Chicago, IL (March 12); and Thomas Jefferson Elementary in Jeffersonville, IN, near Louisville, KY (March 13). Culminating on March 14, students from Head Middle School in Nashville, TN, will perform with RaeLynn at the Grand Ole Opry.

Give a Note Foundation, in partnership with the National Association for Music Education, selected each school to be honored as part of the Music In Our Schools tour for their music programs’ outstanding achievements and recognizing the important role music education plays in their students’ daily curriculum.

In October 2014, RaeLynn had the opportunity to preview “Always Sing” for music educators and students from across the country. She is once again looking forward to sharing stories and honoring their musical endeavors. “There was an instant connection between me and these inspiring teachers and accomplished students,” said Raelynn. “I wanted to do something special for them and writing ‘Always Sing’ seemed like a perfect way to celebrate everything that music can do for students—and adults.”

Tabor Stamper, chair of Give a Note Foundation, comments, “We need to get everyone involved in supporting music education for students. Too often, programs are cut without regard to the life-long benefits music study provides for students. We hope through this tour that people will remember how important music was to them and how it has helped them to achieve success. RaeLynn’s song reminds us that music stays with us and we can ‘Always Sing’… or play.”

“Joining with RaeLynn, one of the brightest young names in country music, and the 2015 Music In Our Schools Tour was a natural fit for Radio Disney,” said Phil Guerini, Vice President, Programming and General Manager, Radio Disney. “We regularly host artists at Radio Disney Studios who were positively impacted by music education in their schools. We are excited to support this program and RaeLynn.”

For information about the tour, real-time updates and photos, visit: http://www.giveanote.org and follow #AlwaysSing on Twitter. Follow RaeLynn on Twitter and raelynnofficial.net/.

Give A Note Foundation—Since 2011, Give A Note has conducted national awareness campaigns and raised funds to support and strengthen music education programs across the U.S. The programs have reached millions of parents and students and provided more than $ 1 million in direct grants to schools. Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM®) is a program of affiliated organization, the National Association for Music Education. MIOSM spotlights music education and the benefits music teachers bring to their students and school communities.
