Studying for the CPA Board Exams

Just the thought of taking the CPA Board Exams can render us helpless and terrified. After all, the results of these exams can either make us or break us. Before we have a nervous breakdown, we should first remember that each Certified Public Accountant had to go through the same ordeal and if they can do it, so can we.

Secondly, there is a CPA Study Course that we can work with to help us not only pass the exams but get good marks as well. Thirdly, we should also remember that it is necessary for us to pass all four tests covered in the CPA Board Exams; all at the same time.

There is an 18-month period where we are given enough time to pass all tests included in the CPA Board Exams.

WHAT IS A CPA STUDY COURSE?

A CPA Study Course is our gateway to passing the board exams. It will provide us with the right tools to study for the exams and give us a higher percentage of passing.

Our choice of a CPA Study Course is then very crucial. Finding the right one that we can comfortably work with is tantamount to our success in the board exams.

There are a number of different study courses available for aspiring CPAs, with each one giving us not only the basics but also helpful other materials to prepare us for the board.

If we wish to study from home at our own time, there is a CPA Study Course that can give us materials we can work on from our own home, with additional online help for questions and even counseling.

There are also test questionnaires and simulated exams that are usually provided by a CPA Study Course provider so we should also check these out prior to signing-up with a specific review center.

OTHER TOOLS FOR A CPA STUDY COURSE

There are also other available materials for us to give us more options when study for the CPA Board Exams. There are downloadable simulated tests that we can find online, which cover all the four parts of the board exams.

We can work on these as if we are already taking the actual exams to get us in the right frame of mind once it is time for us to take the real board exams. These can also help us determine if we need to put in more effort in certain aspects of the test so we can incorporate all of these in our CPA Study Course.

Now, another thing we have to keep in mind is that there are certain States that require us to take the necessary State Board Exams in order to practice being a CPA. We might also find additional help for these state board exams from our chosen CPA Study Course so we can cover all the bases.

While we can also opt to study on our own without any help from review centers, a CPA Study Course can give us invaluable help to prepare us and give us all the right tools for the board exams.

Yoga Strategies to Help Cram For Exams

A feeling of anxiousness or anxiety prior to taking an examination is normal. In fact, some experts believe it is healthy as it serves as an effective stimuli that prompts one to come up with a preparation strategy for an upcoming examination.

But some people are not good with handling their nervousness and anxiety such that it affects their performance in the exam. This is most especially true for those who are cramming for their exam. This makes them repulsive to any preparation method as they are unable to clear their mind.

Allow Body Movement

When an individual feels tensed about the idea of taking an examination that s/he isn’t fully prepared for, the tension is manifested throughout the entire body. Although you have short preparations to ensure that you perform well on your exam, that feeling of nervous tension often reacts on you mentally making you incapable of thinking logically.

Hence, a trick of releasing body tension and nervousness would be really helpful in remaining calm prior to taking your exam. Allowing as much body movement as possible is really helpful. You can do simple exercises such as walking, jogging, or stretching. This will effectively calm your nerves and release any tension that is building up. Doing these body movement enhancement exercises are also quite helpful in waking up your nerves and senses.

Reducing Anxiety and Stress

Stress and anxiety are two of the worst mental and physical health enemies. When people suffer from stress or anxiety, you lose synchronization and focus. This is a deadly combination when you are about to take an examination. The negative emotions or thoughts that you might be having could prevent you from thinking clearly. As a result, you have difficulty remembering all that you have reviewed for the exam and put you at risk for low performance.

Performing Rhythmic Breathing

Rhythmic breathing has been known to offer a wide range of benefits as a yoga practice. Among the physiological effects are increased oxygen supply and re-establishment of the body’s natural rhythm.

Mentally though, rhythmic breathing offers benefits that would help those who are cramming for their exam. It helps bring about calmness of the mind, increase your level of self-confidence, and improve concentration ability. These are all mental abilities that would help improve your performance in an examination. Thus, retention of important information that you need to be able to respond to the exam questionnaires is a very useful benefit of practicing this particular yoga breathing technique.

Deep Breathing

Deep breathing in yoga has been known to effectively combat stress. As you know, preparing for an exam is such a stressful situation to be in. The level of stress also adds up when the actual time of the examination is drawing near and you have not done enough preparation to be confident on your exam performance.

Deep breathing comprises of full and cleansing breaths. This relaxation technique is very simple to perform and yet its effects on the body are very powerful. Here are the steps you can follow:

• Find a comfortable sitting position. Make sure that your back is straight while you place on hand on your chest and the other resting on your stomach.
• Use your nose for breathing in. Do this fully such that you can see your hand resting on your stomach rise. There should also be movement on your chest.
• Use your mouth for exhalation. Do this in a sudden and forceful manner to empty out your lungs.
• Repeat the same process all over again.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Here is another well known strategy used for stress relief due to its effectiveness. It involves two process that follows a systematic approach. The first step is involved with tensing specific muscle groups, while the second part helps in releasing that tension to provide relaxation. This is also a very good relaxation technique to use if you are suffering from muscular tension in specific areas of the body. It takes only a few minutes and would be very effective to perform a few minutes before starting your examination.

You must begin by trying to relax and make your entire body comfortable. You can start with slow and deep breathing to provide relaxation. Once you are ready, you can focus your attention on your right foot. Try to tense your muscles on your right foot by squeezing it and holding this position for at least 10 seconds. After that, relax your right foot and bask in the feeling of relaxing your foot.

Use the same method on your left foot this time. The same sequence of creating and releasing tension should be done. Follow this pattern by slowly working your way upwards in your body.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation must not be confused with meditation. The former is more effective if you want to use this method for stress relief or reducing anxiety caused by cramming for an exam. The idea of mindfulness is basically enabling you to get rid of any negative form of thought and becoming more engaged with the present moment. This quality allows you to focus on the task at hand, which in this case is the exam, and increase ability to concentrate.

Although deeper than regular meditation, it does not equal zoning out though. There is still that certain level of awareness of your physical environment but attaining a more specific focus. This will be able you to be more guided in your mental activities.

Guided Visualization

Lack of focus and unorganized thoughts are very characteristic among individuals who are anxious or cramming for an exam. This is crucial as you could basically forget all the information you have patiently reviewed on previously.

To follow this relaxation technique, you must imagine a serene and tranquil scene. Your goal must be to find peace and release any form of tension, whether mental or physical. It could be somewhere tropical or your favorite place as a child, but it has to have a calming effect on you. Do this with your eyes closed and allow yourself to drift away into the scene. Take note of all sensory impulses too for a more effective stress relief.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is one particular yoga style that you can practice to provide more physical and mental harmony that would help your exam preparation. It comprises of a series of slow and flowing movements. Some of the benefits of practicing Tai Chi includes relaxation of mind and body, revitalized energy, and increased concentration ability.

Tai Chi is a low impact yoga style that you can perform, which suits even those with minimum fitness level or any age level. Plus, the above mentioned benefits will truly help you cope with the tension of an upcoming examination.

For the last 10 years, Marilyn has been advocating the use of Alternative Health Therapies, especially that of a Hatha Yoga practice. Her articles on hatha yoga can be found at http://www.tarunaoils.com/Yoga

How To Prepare For Bank Po Exams

The Public and Private Sector banks are offering many Bank jobs in India to recruit Considerably In the next Three years as new branches of various banks are to be opened and lots of employees will retire in the next 2 years creating many more Bank jobs.

Bank exams, be it for clerical or Bank PO, are not as difficult as people might think them to be. But the problem is the vacancies to number of applicants ratio, which is normally very low. So matter of worry and emphasis is about your preparation and time management and not the toughness of the exam.

Though the exact pattern of the examination is described in manual of application in the application form issued by bank. For now, we will consider the standard pattern for A PO exam that has a total of 225 questions with 135 minutes time i.e., 2 hrs and 15 minutes. That accounts for 36 seconds per question. Sounds cheap!

But thats not all as we are not going to attempt each and every question. Remember that the minimum cut-off marks for each section that should be crossed are normally 40%. If a candidate attempts around 180 with good precise answers then hes done a pretty good job! More than 190 are excellent.

Those who have taken a few bank exams in the past should follow the strategy that they are accustomed of, but if someone takes a bank exam for the first time then he/she should start off with General awareness/General knowledge as this part does not take much time if prepared efficiently. As candidate doesnt have to think a lot over any question its just a matter of reading and ticking the answer if he knows about it. This part should be finished within 10-15minutes time. Thats a good start!

The next section to attempt would be of General English and in it the first 9-10 questions will be of comprehensive passages that take a lot of time to read and understand. So That part is recommend to be left as the rest of the section is pretty easy and Basic English. Again this part should be completed within 20-25 minutes. Till now we have done 2 sections within 40-50 minutes and two more are left with another 135 questions to be done in 85-95 minutes.

Choice among the next two sections, Reasoning and Quantitative ability should be made Depending upon your strength and practice. Go for any of them but do remember to solve the easier questions first as it will save time and will be the deciding factor. For Example the DI part in Quant Is an important and easy part and which will be the scoring and deciding factor. Most of the question in DI can be solved without even using the pen. So prepare well for DI and Attempt it first.

Any thing that requires long calculation in Quant or serious thinking in Reasoning should be left and come back to it if time remains in the end. Questions on compound interest calculations in Quant and circular arrangement in Reasoning could be avoided at first and may be attempted at last if the time Permits.

So time is the most important resource and should be managed well to get an edge over the other candidates and ensure a place there in the Selected Candidates.

All the best to your Success!!!

How to Prepare For the Exams

Every learning process requires careful planning and organisation since it is always building up to the final exams. This, however, tends to be a very stressful time.

The main reason is lack of preparation resulting in desperate cramming before the exam which, in turn, produces disastrous results and unleashes huge guilt issues.

Many people experience health problems with increasing stress. Sleeping difficulties, lack of concentration, nausea, diarrhoea etc.

Thus we can all agree that thorough preparation will increase our confidence level and reduce stress to constructive dose of adrenaline.

I, personally, had to go through many tough exams- most of them were oral exams and course material was in average 2000 pages. This requires memorising pages and pages of data, names and absorbing specific terminology.

I soon discovered that there are so many other important aspects of learning apart from just sitting down and studying.

The first thing is Organisation of course material. Make sure you have all the notes and relevant textbooks. Most importantly obtain all past exams papers and talk to students who have already passed this course. Try your best to identify lecturer’s favorite topics and questions that keep appearing in the past papers.

The second thing is Organization of your Time. For this you need precise date for the exams and then you will get the rough order of your preparation. The next step is to divide your studying time into days reserved for particular subjects. The time table must be reasonably organised allowing more time for the difficult courses and you must be able to follow it.

Set performance target for every exam.

Have breaks between studying sessions and eat plenty of fruit and vegetable. Avoid large quantities of coffee and tea since this will disturb your sleeping pattern.

All of this represents the main structure for successful exam preparation. To get the complete feeling of confidence, however, we need to arm ourselves with various studying techniques. My favourite is a combination of learning by associations and photographic learning.

CPIM Exam – Top 10 Tips to Pass All 5 CPIM Exams the First Time

Obtaining the Certified in Production and Inventory Management certification by passing all 5 tests is difficult, here are 10 tips so you can pass the Basics of Supply Chain, Master Planning of Resources, Detailed Scheduling and Planning, Execution and Control of Operations, and finally the Strategic Management of Resources test the first time.

1.  Know the APICS Dictionary.  Knowing this terminology when reading each test questions will be essential to understanding the questions and getting the question correct!  If you are an APICS member you can get a free copy of the dictionary.

2.  Make sure to study important APICS books like “Introduction to Materials Management” by Arnold and the APICS OMBOC. These books are listed as important references in the CPIM exam content manual.

3.  Map out your study schedule– simply walking into a CPIM exam thinking you will pass is almost certain failure. Dedicate an hour each day to study and prepare for your next test.

4.  Get plenty of sleep the night before the test. If you party all night before your test you will not be 100% prepared walking into the test. Arrive early so you are not rushing to get into the test.

5.  Have some life experience in Production and Inventory Management before taking the test. Life experience is something you can not get from a book. Working in a production/ inventory environment will give you the experience necessary to pass the exams.

6.  Use a CPIM exam simulation software like professional test pro’s CPIM simulation software so you can practice in a simulated environment before you go and take the real test.  Answering CPIM questions similar to the actual exam will give you the peace of mind that you will be able to pass the test. Don’t take the test until you score above 78% on the simulation CPIM tests. You only need ~70% to pass each test, but you will want some extra padding before actually walking into the real test for the first time.

7.  Read and re-read the CPIM exam content manual. This will give you the content for the exam along with some sample questions.  This small booklet will be the core subject areas that each test will cover.  Knowing these subject areas can focus your studying so you can pass the next test you are preparing for.

8.  Use time management in your test. Don’t spend an hour trying to solve one question forcing you to rush through the last 10 questions. Mark any question you are having troubles with and come back to it later if you have time. Your test simulation software can help you practice this time management.

9.  Read the questions carefully. Some qualifying words APICS use are most, least, except, or not. These are important words in order for you can answer the questions properly.

10. Take your time. 5 tests is a lot to get through. Focus on one test, pass it, then start working on the next test. I recommend a month to study and prepare for each test. Some people can do it faster than that, some will need more time.

Following these 10 simple tips will put you in a good position to pass your CPIM exams the first time.

Preparing Children For Their Exams

Examination time can be a stressful period for both children and parents. The children have to prepare the curriculum and deliver at the exam time, and the parents have to ensure that they assist their children as far as possible in preparing for the exams. In fact, parents can play a major role in preparing their children to succeed in academic examinations. The role of parents in preparing their children for exams for different age group of children is highlighted below.

Ages 7 to 11

Children in the age group 7 to 11 are, basically, students of primary education. Children in this age group are just learning the basics of every subject at this stage. The immediate goal of children in this age group is to clear the SAT exams with a good score, and to prepare a good foundation for other important examinations in the future. As a parent, your task is to guide your child at such a tender age to come out of his/her exams with flying colors. Here are some useful tips that will help you in preparing your child for their exams.

1. Preparation is the best stress buster at exam-time. Make sure your child adheres to this golden rule, and is not left with any portion of the curriculum unprepared.
2. The period running up to the exams is a golden time. The key is to organize the timetable in such a way so as to cover all subjects thoroughly.
3. Children at this stage are quite impressionable. Therefore, it’s much easier to inculcate positivism in their minds so that your child can develop the coping mechanisms to learn to deal with the pressure of exams. This enables them to de-stress themselves and not panic at exam time. Panicking during an exam is one of the main reasons children under perform in exams. Teach them simple routines to deal with exam stress at his age and these methods will remain with them through the rest of their lives. This subject is covered in slightly more detail at the end of the article.
4. If your child is having a tough time concentrating on a particular subject, try out innovative techniques from everyday life to make the subject interesting. Try windows brain training software or one of the leading packages on the Nintendo DS console. This subject is covered in slightly more detail at the end of the article.
5. If the child is generally having a tough time concentrating on their studies, it’s better to give him/her a break. Preferably, you should persuade the child to indulge in the activities he/she likes the most. Eg. Sports, TV, games etc. This should recharge the batteries and improve concentration levels of the child.
6. Make sure your child has adequate physical exercise, a healthy diet and regular sleep during the examination period.
7. Don’t leave it until the last minute. If you’ve inculcated in the child the habit to be organized and adhere to all the deadlines throughout the year, half the job of preparing your child for their exams is already taken care of.
8. Children must be made aware of the importance of planning for the future. If the child knows what’s expected of him during the exam time, it’ll save him/her from the surprise element of added pressure. In this regard, preparing a monthly schedule for the child, and encouraging him/her to adhere to it, could be a good way of bringing in discipline in the child’s routine.
9. Lastly, do not overburden your child with high expectations. Just leave them be and there are far more likely to deliver good grades. Your child has probably put themselves under enough pressure without you adding to it.

Ages 11 to 16

The pre-teens and adolescent years are formative stages of a child’s academic career. Preparing for their High school exams and GCSE’s may seem the hardest task due to several distractions at this stage of their life. As a parent, you need to handle children of this age group with extreme care. Here are some useful tips that will help you in preparing the pre-teen and adolescent children for their exams.

1. Encouragement and letting your child know about the importance of GCSEs is your primary role as a parent.
2. Trust on hard work throughout the year rather than any last minute revisions.
3. The importance of organization and scheduling can never be overemphasized for any age group. Help your child prepare a timetable. Make room for their normal day to day activities. Never let them cut activities they enjoy to make room for more revision time. This will only lead to a build up of stress that could lead to poor performance in all of their exams.
4. Practice and revision throughout the year without leaving out any portion is the key to success and your child should be encouraged to clear any difficulties or doubts instead of omitting the tough portion altogether.
5. It’s extremely vital to allow and encourage your children to rest adequately so that they are refreshed every time they study. They should also be encouraged to indulge in different activities, and not just concentrate on studies.
6. Make the environment perfect for studies. Ask your family members not to disturb the child when he/she is studying, and avoid distractions from any source, like the TV. Please note that some children benefit from listening to some kinds of music while they study.
7. Make sure your child is sleeping well and adequately.
8. Always praise them for their hard work and reward them with little gifts.
9. Inculcate positive thoughts by explaining to your child that there is no point brooding over a bad performance in one exam.
10. Ask your child if he/she needs any help. This moral support is enough for your child to remain honest with his/her exam preparations.
11. Promise a big family celebration after the exams are over, and keep your promise!

You can only do so much, but the final results of exams are entirely the efforts of your child. Always remind your kids of the golden rule of life.

Games improve memory and exam performance

With the introduction of the brain training software for the Nintendo games console educational software as become cool. Children who are reluctant to learn using conventional methods are now being taught using educational software in the classroom. In one example we have created software that has different targets moving around a smart board and the pupil as to shoot the right answer using a remote control. This is a great fun method for teaching mental maths and spelling to the younger age groups.

Research into educational computer games like the brain training software for windows, and the Nintendo games console as shown that children who use the software for 20 minutes at the start of the day easily outperformed children using conventional methods.

Children using the software tended to settle down more quickly and concentrate with much higher levels of concentration. The same results have also been achieved by adults using the same software. Also, long and short term memory was found to be improved if the software is used on a regular basis.

To improve your child’s performance in their exams try to find the right balance between conventional methods, using past exam papers, revision guides and computer based methods, on-line learning (SAM’s Learning etc), computer software, brain training software etc.

Methods for controlling stress

In the months before the examination period take up a sport or try to get some light exercise by going on a bike ride or a long walk. Physical activity is a great method for reducing stress and anxiety.

At the start of the exam read the exam papers instructions carefully thinking about nothing else. This will prevent you from making mistakes by answering questions you shouldn’t’t attempt because you have attempted other questions; but it will also focus your mind removing thoughts that lead to anxiety. Find a perfume or deodorant that as a calming affect on you.

If you feel really anxious hold you nose and breathe out or breathe into your cupped hands. This increases the carbon dioxide in the blood causing a calming affect. Find your own destress points, massage your temples or just over your nose with a gentle circular motion. If you suffer from really serious nerves or anxiety don’t suffer alone, go and see a doctor.
