The Austin Forum on Technology & Society in partnership with Austin Public Library presents Blockchain: Bringing the Transformation Home with Jeremy Drzal, Block512 and Karen Kilroy, Kilroy Blockchain Tuesday, July 10, 2018 Austin Central Library – Event Center 710 W Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 787015:45 p.m. – Doors Open6:15 p.m. – Presentation, Q&A7:30 p.m. – Networking What is blockchain? Why has it emerged as a potentially disruptive solution for so many applications? How will it transform business, government, and society? How can/will Austin support, accelerate, and even lead this transformation? Blockchain is a technology that promises utterly secure transactions of all types. It is widely known as the foundation for bitcoin and now for many other digital currencies, or cryptocurrencies, but this is just one important application. Blockchain is a distributed computing technology founded on principles of security, transparency, and permanence, and has potential to increase usability and immutability of all kinds of records and peer-to-peer transactions, from health records to property ownership to distributed IoT applications and prevention/detection of contaminated or counterfeited physical goods—and more. It can accomplish such things while preventing unauthorized usage, corruption of information, and theft of assets. But, what exactly is it, and how does it provide simplicity, enable security, remove ‘middlemen,’ and ultimately promise a more transparent-but-secure, peer-to-peer method of transactions with permanent records? Come hear blockchain experts Tiana Laurence and Karen Kilroy explain all this and more, and learn how Austin can be a leader in the blockchain revolution. We welcome your participation! Please send us your questions, answers and prognostications in advance at info@austinforum.org. Admission to the Austin Forum is always free. The Austin Forum accepts donations of used cell phones and smart phones at all our events. All devices will have a factory reset and be set up as new by the team at Austin Pathways’ nationally-recognized “Unlocking the Connection” initiative, which will connect every public housing resident with a digital device, digital literacy training, and a free or very low-cost internet connection. Your donated phone can change lives and help close Austin's digital divide, thanks to Austin Pathways. Thanks to Austin Public Library for their partnership. And a special thanks to all our sponsors!

What is blockchain? How does it relate to bitcoin? How can blockchain tools be used to transform lives and empower people all over the world?  There's more to blockchain than Bitcoin! Real-life blockchain programs are being used today to transform lives around the world, enabling people to gain a new level of dignity and economic empowerment.  Blockchain is an utterly incorruptible 'truth ledger' of records that operates as an independent, permanent, and transparent database coexisting in multiple locations and shared by a community. This technology has the potential to be used for a wide variety of applications, such as recording land ownership documents, cryptographically secured health records, tamper-proof voting records, vehicle registries, and disbursing fraud-proof government benefits or digital identities for refugees lacking government documents. Blockchain banking services enable disadvantaged earners around the world to secure currency in a format that is easily transferable, but not easily stolen. Document security removes power from corrupt businesses and bureaucracies and prevents deeds and other documents from being stolen or altered without consent. From pottery makers and farmers in developing countries to Austin music teachers for children with autism, people are using blockchain technology to support themselves and provide critical services. Join these four experts to learn more about what blockchain is, and which tools and applications you can begin using today to empower yourself and change the lives of others. Discounted Parking–  after 5! Pay only in the convenient Northshore/Galvanize garage after 5pm courtesy of LAZ parking.  Additional parking is available in nearby garages and surface lots. Free parking is available on the street after 6pm. The Austin Forum is generously sponsored by:
