On November 24, 2014, Per Wickstrom had an opportunity to interview retired NFL All-Pro Lawrence Taylor to discuss the problem of substance abuse and the solutions that are offered by treatment. Taylor, through his own history of drug abuse and recovery, gives a unique first-person perspective on addiction and the rehabilitation process.
Nicknamed “L.T.” by his teammates on the New York Giants, Taylor’s early career was almost cut short by the league due to failed drug tests, yet he was able to straighten out long enough to make a mark in football history. Now known as one of the greatest linebackers in NFL history, L.T. quickly rose to fame. After retirement, however, he experienced the downward spiral into drug abuse that, ultimately, led him to where he is today. He now takes advantage of every opportunity to help others in recovery by sharing his story and giving encouragement in the struggle to overcome addiction.
How LT Got Sober
“Drugs, alcohol, all of it - it gets you to a point where you are no longer in control, the drug is in control,” Taylor recalls of his own experience. “I did have the tools to stop doing drugs, it was all inside me, and it took me going to a rehab to bring it out. It got to a point that sobriety was my thing, that was something that nobody could take away from me but myself.”
As the CEO of drug and alcohol treatment centers, Per appreciates any chance that he has to speak with those who, like himself, have faced and overcome their addictions. Inviting people like L.T. to speak to those in recovery is a great source of inspiration and encouragement for them. As Per says, “Giving back is the key to sobriety.”
